On Energy - No single solution is the answer

Written by: Senator Mel Martinez | Publication: Florida Times Union

June 21, 2008 -

Our nation is in the most serious energy crisis in recent memory.

High gasoline prices are putting a strain on the American family.

Increased anxiety coming from the uncertainty in the housing market as well as high food costs are combining to create great stress on many Floridians.

There are a number of factors impacting the price of gas, including the influence of speculators and a weak dollar and most importantly the increased worldwide demand for fuel while supplies have remained stagnant.

To address the supply side, I support using our natural resources to increase domestic production. Offshore production is one area where we've made progress.

In 2006, I helped to negotiate the opening of 8.3 million acres in the eastern Gulf of Mexico. This is estimated to contain 5.8 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and 1.25 billion barrels of oil. This entire area is currently open to exploration.

It is available away from Florida's beaches and it provides an available resource that could help ease the current supply problem.

Another promising domestic resource is the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska. On five different occasions in my Senate career, I have voted to open this remote area for oil exploration. It is environmentally safe; the Alaskan people want to develop it and we need the resources.

The size of the land considered for exploration is 2,000 acres within a 19.6 million-acre wilderness. That is the virtual equivalent of a quarter of a football field.

This area contains about 10.4 billion barrels of oil, meaning we could have another 1.1 million barrels coming into the U.S. supply every day, for decades. I will continue to support exploration as long as it is supported by those most directly impacted by it.

Increased oil production alone is not enough. We also need to increase the capacity to refine the oil that comes into the U.S. For more than 30 years, no new refinery has been built in our country.

Also, we have to focus on conservation.

And we need a comprehensive approach that includes a diversified fuel mix. This includes biofuels where Florida can play a big role.

Our universities are engaged in research that could provide more energy and green jobs.

It is time that Republicans and Democrats come together and find reasonable compromise on a sensible energy policy that will help the future of our country and the struggling American family.
